A Parking Lot Where His Desk Once Stood


An architectural rendering included with the building permit for the planned development project. These apartments are to be constructed on either side of the original bastide.


The photo above shows the house before its partial demolition. Beyond the palm tree is the wing the developer destroyed, where James Baldwin wrote If Beale Street Could Talk and An Open Letter to My Sister Angela Davis. If you compare the two images closely, you can see that an entrance to the underground parking garage appears to be planned for the exact spot where his living quarters were located.
